‘Under-investment in these positions looks to continue’ – These West Ham fans discuss summer transfer priorities

|

West Ham United could be set for another summer spending spree or settling for free-agents depending on what report you read, and these fans have been discussing some potential business in East London on the KUMB forum.

One the heaviest transfer rumours to continue out of the winter market was our speculative interest in Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez, who looked set to be our Marko Arnautovic replacement when the Austrian waved goodbye to the fans amid rumours of a switch to China.

Nothing ever came of that, and the talk swiftly moved from a January deal to a summer move, only for Barcelona and Liverpool to reportedly muscle in on the action.

Now the rumours over our interest have cooled, and instead we are being linked with a soon-to-be free agent currently on Millwall’s books in right-back Mahlon Romeo, which would act as a similar deal to the one that brought Ryan Fredericks to the London Stadium last summer.

Some players currently at the club must have their futures decided when the curtain falls on the current campaign, as January addition Samir Nasri was only signed on a short-term deal.

Not to forget fan-favourite Manuel Lanzini, either, as the Argentine’s Hammers contract expires on June 30, 2020 – less than a year and a half away.

With so much still to decide in East London, the West Ham faithful had this to say on the KUMB forum…

“We have scouted Millwall full back, Romeo.” – Puff Daddy (March 6, 11:21)

“Another fullback available on a ‘free’ at the end of the season. The under-investment in these positions looks to continue. On Maxi Gomez – does anybody know, or has anybody seen anything to suggest, if his release clause might lower upon relegation? I watch a lot of Celta as my Spanish club. I’d suggest he hasn’t had a really good game since January” – YorksHammer (March 6, 11:45)

“[Lanzini] will be going into the last year of his contract at the end of this season. We need to get him tied down, preferably this season. I expect some big clubs are keeping an eye on the situation already…” – Asters89 (March 6, 11:46)

“Nasri is an interesting one, do we keep him, I don’t know, he normally tails off after a year somewhere and is on good money, on paper yeah give him another year in actuality I’m not so sure.” – Fmgod (March 6, 12:34)

“Based on what a game and a half and then 3 or more out sick? I’d say “Buyer Beware [on Nasri].” – Cuenca ‘ammer (March 6, 13:05)

“Fredericks was on a free. Assuming Zaba stays for another season, we’d have him, Fredericks and two prospects in the wings (Johnson and Romeo).” – Kev59 (March 6, 13:07)

“[Nasri’s] another sick note. Get rid.” – Nick Sneddon (March 6, 13:42)

“I had a lot of question marks when we brought him [Nasri] in, then he had a couple of games where he looked very sharp and I was happy to eat my words. Since then, he’s injured or ill.

“Lanzini is back, we’ve got wages for another playmaker tied up for another 2 years in Wilshere. Do we really want to run the risk with Nasri, or could we invest in a younger player in that role?” – Denzil (March 6, 14:50)

“Do we have the money or the clout to sign RLC or Grealish? I really really rate both of them.” – Denzil (March 6, 14:51)
