Plenty of West Ham United fans heaped praise on club legend Sir Trevor Brooking after they watched highlights of our famous 3-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1976.
Despite the 1975/76 campaign not being a particularly successful one for us, this night put it right up there as one of the more unforgettable ones.
Brooking was the man that stole the show under the floodlights at the old Boleyn Ground as he helped John Lyall’s side march on to the European Cup Winners’ Cup final.
Our legend scored a brace in the second half, along with a goal from Keith Robson which secured our ticket to Brussels. Beverungen pulled one back with three minutes to go, but the visitors ran out of time and Hammers could not be denied.
Is the Frankfurt triumph one of our greatest ever nights?
Yes
No
In what was a high-scoring affair, we were unable to bring the trophy back to Upton Park after we fell 4-2 to Belgian side Anderlecht at the Heysel Stadium.
As a result, supporters hailed Brooking’s involvement that night and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that “you can keep your Thierry”, referring to Arsenal’s Thierry Henry, while another described him as a “genius”.
Sir Trevor at his very best

I was only 8 at the time but one off my earliest memories listening to it on the radio. Ohh for nights like that again. Amazing how they still played good football on that pitch.
