‘Total lack of defensive effort and laziness’ – These West Ham fans debate fringe star’s future

|

Arthur Masuaku could easily find his name of the transfer list in the summer, but West Ham United fans on the /R/Hammers Reddit page have been debating whether or not the DR Congo international deserves a future in East London.

Football.London even reported last month that the left-back was considered to be on a five-man shortlist of first-team members that Manuel Pellegrini feels he could do without next term.

If we were to cash in on the defensively questionable full-back, you would find it hard to locate a large percentage of the fanbase dismayed at the club’s decision.

That said, the fringe star does offer our Chilean manager an interesting squad option, much like Michail Antonio on the other side.

The Englishman was alright at right-back, excelled at striker, and is now finding a home for himself on the wing following extensive injury spells.

Masuaku could offer Pellegrini this going forward on the left-hand side, working as the understudy to not only Aaron Cresswell – or whoever we could buy in the summer – but also Felipe Anderson, as the DR Congo international has shown he is better going forward than he is tracking back.

Not to say he cannot defend, as the 25-year-old has occasionally demonstrated some ability to stop the opposition from attacking our box, but defending is not his best quality.

That could be why so many of the responses on the /R/Hammers Reddit page were from fans who did not hold great confidence in Masuaku’s future at the club being as our first-choice left-back, if in East London altogether…
