‘Can’t wait’, ‘Gutted to miss’ – Some West Ham fans look ahead to upcoming debut

Leicester City arriving at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon may not just be a key game to our chances of finishing in seventh, and keeping an eye on the Europa League, but it will also be the matchday debut of the infamous claret carpet.

Some supporters have thus dubbed Saturday ‘Carpet Day’, even though the club wish it to be known as ‘Claret & Blue Day’ amid plans to celebrate the pitch surround finally being unveiled.

There will be a pre-game pyrotechnic display as the players exit the tunnel, a crowd-surfacing banner, and the club has asked supporters attending the Premier League encounter to be decked in Claret and Blue to make the stadium a sea of our traditional colours.

The matchday programme has even been given a special Claret and Blue treatment, as there will be two versions on offer – one in each colour – in order to give supporters a “unique souvenir of the day”.

Plans to have a claret carpet surround the pitch have been in the works for a long time now, and will finally replace the green running track overlay that has been in place since 2016.

Fans, however, are not taking the occasion as serious as the club, it seems…
