Jean-Phillipe Mateta or Maxi Gomez? West Ham United fans were asked the question about who they would prefer in the team and it seems a number of them all favoured one individual a little more than the other.
Twitter account West Ham Fan Zone posed the question to their followers and it appears Gomez was the outright winner as many had stated they would rather see the South American star in the claret and blue next season.
Mateta’s name has recently been thrown into the old transfer rumour mill this summer as we are thought to be keeping tabs on a number of French players who are competing in the Under-21 European Championships and he is one that is thought to have been scouted (exWHUemployee).
The 21-year-old starred for Mainz in the Bundesliga this season as he netted 14 goals in his 34 top-flight appearances, whilst he also provided his team-mates with three assists as well (Transfermarkt), so it is hardly surprising that Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos have been taking a look at him.
However, as well all know with the well-documented pursuit of Gomez over the last six months or so, the Uruguayan is thought to have been our main target for that period of time and fans do not want to see the club give up on him.
Currently playing for his country in the Copa America, the 22-year-old managed to save Celta de Vigo from relegation last season with his 13 goals (Transfermarkt) following a campaign whereby he managed to net 18 the year before (Transfermarkt).
Although a large number of the fans wanted both men, it would seem they would prefer Gomez if they were only allowed to have one.
One supporter was ‘100%’ in his pick for the Uruguay international whilst others wanted West Ham to get the man Pellegrini and Husillos appear to have been so desperate to get.

Maxi Gomez. That’s who Pellegrini’s number 1 target is then that’s who we should go and get.
Even if we pay over the going rate, it’s still worth it.
Paying over the threshold for the right player is better than getting a cheaper alternative.

I’d rather have Gomez, but Mateta is a great player with a tonne of potential!
Gomez just has those multiple seasons scoring well below his belt!
