West Ham fringe player set for international debut

|

Josh Cullen could be set to make his Republic of Ireland debut, as he is in the squad for Republic of Ireland’s upcoming fixtures against Denmark and Gibraltar.

The centre midfielder has represented Ireland up to Under 21 level so far and has impressed in the English Football League while on loan from the Hammers.

He spent this year with Charlton Athletic, playing 29 League One games in which he scored once and assisted five times.

His most important contribution came in the Play-Off Final though, where he put in the cross which Patrick Bauer scored the 94th-minute winner from.

It could be this ability to contribute in vital moments which has persuaded Mick McCarthy to call him up to the national team squad.

However, there is no guarantee he will play with the likes of Conor Hourihane and Jeff Hendrick for competition.

Whether or not he will be in West Ham’s first-team next season is yet to be decided too, but Cullen will now be concentrating on his national team duties and trying to earn the debut he would have been dreaming about for so long.

Getting on the pitch and impressing could even help him ensure he will be in Manuel Pellegrini’s thoughts going forward.
