Transfer News: West Ham target admits disappointment in failed move to England

|

In a transfer window where Genk’s Joakim Maehle watched two of his teammates, Mbwana Samatta and Sander Berge, leave the comforts of the Belgian Pro League for the Premier League, it’s easy to understand why he’s frustrated that his move failed to materialise in January.

According to The Daily Star, the young right-back was a target for West Ham in the January window. The Hammers need to plug some defensive holes and the young Danish defender looked to be a decent enough fit, yet the move failed to happen.

The young defender still has many years ahead of him in his career, though, and a move to the London Stadium later in his career could still be on the cards, although for now he’s had to battle against the bitter disappointment of knowing he could have made the switch to England.

Whilst speaking to Belgian outlet De Zondag he expressed his frustrations, and whilst keeping entirely professional about the matter the right-back certainly didn’t hold back talking about his failed move to the Premier League, something which he can hardly be blamed for.

There is every chance that in the summer David Moyes and the Hammers make another move to try and sign the young Dane, and if the club remain in the Premier League then the alure of top-flight English football whilst battling against Ryan Fredericks for a starting spot could be enough to tempt the Dane to push harder for a move this time around.

Where will we be playing next season?

Championship

You can see what Maehle said here:

‘It is not surprising that Berge and Samatta are now also gone. We know the club’s strategy, it’s a good thing for everyone. That I had to stay was a disappointment, yes. I am ambitious, watched those beautiful foreign clubs pass by … We were champions, that does not work every year, perhaps this was the chance.’
