Report: West Ham will go head to head with PL rivals to capture Champions League winner

|

West Ham United look set for a transfer tussle with Burnley to capture Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, according to reports.

The 32-year-old’s current contract at Anfield is coming to a close and is way down the pecking order on Merseyside, having been initially brought in by former boss Brendan Rodgers for £25m from Southampton.

Before the current campaign was suspended, Lallana had only scored once from three starts and 12 appearances off the pitch, which provides a glimpse of the reality which could be that his future perhaps lies somewhere else.

According to the Mirror, Sean Dyche’s Burnley will take on West Ham to secure the services of the former England international, having been one of a number of Premier League players to sign extensions to their contracts in the coming weeks.

The report adds that there remains a slight possibility that the former Southampton ace could stay at Anfield for another year, but seems determined to acquire more first-team minutes under his belt.

Sadly for the Champions League winner, he has been unfortunate when it has come to retaining match fitness over the course of his career. The £8.55m-rated attacking midfielder has missed a total of 67 games, mostly to do with his hamstring which has severely held him back.

It would certainly be a leap of faith for West Ham to make a commitment to someone with such a poor fitness record, through no fault of his own.

We need someone going forward that we can rely on and that can perform on a high and consistent level to play alongside Declan Rice in the middle. As much as Lallana could do that short-term, I’m unsure that his hamstring will allow him to.
