Opinion: Why the Hammers should still be cautious in Europe

|

Ahead of West Ham’s clash with SK Rapid Wien on Thursday in the Europa League group stage, David Moyes’ side remain strong favourites to pick up another victory in Europe.

We’re top of Group H following our 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb just a couple of weeks ago. Goals from Michail Antonio and Declan Rice sealed the three points in a dominating performance.

Now, with Rapid Wien coming up, we’ve have been tipped by many to go on and extend our lead at the top of the group. Wien are arguably the our weakest opponents in Europe this year and David Moyes should expect to come away with all three points.

However, it is important to remember that with all this confidence and hype, after a great start to the season, that the team does not get too complacent when it comes to these fixtures.

We’ve only lost once so far this entire season and have beaten the likes of Manchester United and Leicester City already. Moyes has done a fantastic job so far with the club and it is still hard to see the manager getting carried away too much just yet.

Often as we have seen in European football, teams like Rapid Wien can cause big upsets when their opposition were the overwhelming favourites.

Just this season we have already seen the likes of Pacos de Ferreira beat Tottenham Hotspur and BSC Young Boys beat Manchester United.

This is still West Ham’s first-ever Europa League group stage campaign and the team have only experienced one game so far. Victory against Dinamo Zagreb was great for the club but David Moyes and his squad must not get carried away just yet.

A win against Rapid Wien on Thursday will put us in a good position within the group, and the team must remain focused on getting nothing but three points this time out.
