Opinion: West Ham’s back up players have a big point to prove

|

Following a successful week of football for West Ham, which saw the team win on the road against both Man United and Leeds United, David Moyes and his squad have never looked in better shape.

One of the major talking points that came from Wednesday’s 1-0 EFL Cup win at Old Trafford was that the Hammers now have a deeper squad that they can rotate and rely on in cup competitions.

Moyes made 10 changes to his starting lineup from the one that lost to the Red Devils in the Premier League just a few days earlier, and the team wasn’t affected at all. It showed how West Ham’s second team almost had a point to prove to show the manager and fans that they can be called upon when needed.

The spirit and passion the team showed in that game was generated from the Moyes’ second string of players and it was one of the main reasons why they had won the match.

West Ham’s first team have played so well over the past two seasons that barely any changes have been made to Moyes’ usual starting XI.

This, however, will only make the bench players want to work harder. The manager has developed a philosophy where each squad member knows they will have to put in the graft in order to get more first-team action, which pays dividends for everyone involved.

Going forward to the rest of the season, West Ham will have a lot of fixtures to play now that there is a potentially successful Europa League campaign ahead.

Unlike last season, the Moyes has a much deeper squad to choose from now. Being able to call upon trusted players from the bench is something that West Ham supporters have not always seen, which is why there is potentially a lot more promise about the club’s chances of success again this season than there may have been at the beginning of the summer transfer window.
