Opinion: West Ham should avoid £350,000-a-week “flop” and look elsewhere

|

I was quite surprised to hear that we were looking to sign Alexis Sanchez.

That’s if you believe the reports last week from FCInterNews.it, which suggests that we have made contact with his agent to bring him back to the Premier League.

The 31-year-old recently moved to Italy from Manchester United after he initially traded places with Henrikh Mkhitaryan to move to Old Trafford from Arsenal in January 2018.

However, the 132-capped Chile international has had nothing short of a nightmare in the north and was shipped off to Inter on a season-long loan last summer and is expected to return at the end of the season.

Having been described as a “flop“, Sanchez is currently on an eye-watering £350,000-a-week at United, with our highest-paid player being Andriy Yarmolenko on £115,000-a-week. Even if we could afford that sort of wage package for a player, it would destroy the wage structure at the club.

Would you bring Alexis Sanchez to the London Stadium?

Yes

No

Not only that but what has happened to the Alexis Sanchez we all watched at Arsenal? It’s almost as if he disappeared overnight. I would have taken that version of the 31-year-old in a heartbeat – but not now.

With just one goal in 15 appearances for Inter and with an average of just 0.4 shots per game, his poor form continues to rumble on, making it less likely that he’ll stick around at the San Siro. The same man who scored just five times in 45 outings for the Red Devils.

We can do so much better as a club, rather than lowering our standards for Sanchez. Yes, I never thought I would say those words in the same sentence. However, we are in enough trouble as it is and we need to fill the void that Javier Hernandez left.
