Opinion: Midweek defeat had one key positive and it cannot be a one-off for West Ham

|

On Wednesday evening, West Ham fans had the worst of times against Wolverhampton Wanderers, falling 2-0 at Molineux in what can only be described as a routine win for the home side. However, it was not all doom and gloom for the Hammers.

Whilst the likes of Felipe Anderson and Sebastien Haller were far from at their best and have got an awful long way to go to reach an acceptable level to be West Ham starters from the displays at Molineux, the moment the fans will choose to remember is the cameo appearance of one electric youngster.

The man in question, as you will all know, is the sublime Nathan Holland. At the age of just 21-years-old the fans have been calling for the starlet to get his chance in the Premier League for a long time, yet Wednesday was his first involvement in a matchday squad in the league this season.

Manuel Pellegrini has been reluctant to use the young wide-man in his senior side, and that’s despite the poor performances of the likes of Anderson and Pablo Fornals in those wide areas. However, the wait for Holland to feature did end in that Wolves defeat.

The youngster replaced Mr West Ham, Mark Noble, with just 20 minutes to go, and it was a massive moment for the fans who have been calling for this for what has felt like an age this season, although he couldn’t influence the game the way he would have liked.

Should Nathan Holland be given a run in the first team?

Yes of course! He can't make us worse

Not yet! He's not ready

With that being said, Holland still managed to complete two dribbles and win one free-kick with his pace and trickery after his introduction (WhoScored), and the next step will be for him to play 45 minutes as opposed to 20, and start getting assists and goals for Pellegrini to keep his place.
