Opinion: Latest news on West Ham man simply must spell the end of his London Stadium tenure

|

There’s only one word that is synonymous with Andy Carroll, and that word is ‘injury’. The Englishman seems to have spent half of his career on the injury shelf, and his time at West Ham has been particularly hampered by problems.

According to Transfer Markt, he’s suffered 12 separate injury issues since moving to West Ham, with spells of over 100 and even 200-plus days out of action during that time.

He’s featured fairly regularly throughout 2019, but now, his campaign appears to be at an end. According to the Sun, his latest injury blow is set to force him out of action for the rest of the season, and with his contract set to expire, surely he’s played his last game for the Hammers?

After all, what exactly is he offering at West Ham at present?

He hasn’t scored a single Premier League goal this season, and he hasn’t made a single assist. He’s only started 3 games, and whenever he has played, he simply hasn’t looked good enough. On top of that, at 30-years-old, we can’t be expecting his injury problems to suddenly improve. He’s had issues throughout his career, and they are only getting worse. To offer him a new deal would not only mean that another player doesn’t get a chance, but it would simply be a means of throwing money down the drain.

The Andy Carroll fans might say that on his day he’s tremendous, or that we don’t have any other player like him, and they’d be right, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth hanging on to him. Particularly for a back-up forward, the one trait needed is reliability, both in terms of goalscoring and availability. Carroll has neither, and he’s simply proving to be a bit of a waste of space in the West Ham squad.
