West Ham produced a solid performance to beat London rivals Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with Aaron Creswell scoring the winner just after half time with a low drive.
But much of the focus was on the debut of West Ham goalkeeper David Martin, who made his debut for the Hammers at the age of 33.
Martin joined West Ham in June from Millwall and was signed as cover for first-choice Lukasz Fabianski and Roberto. But Roberto’s form, having conceded nine goals in three matches before the Chelsea game, was under intense scrutiny from West Ham fans and Pellegrini had to make a change.
The veteran keeper didn’t disappoint on his debut, producing some fine saves, which were all cheered by West Ham fans.
You’ll be loved forever at West Ham after today. Hero! I think after a tough couple months, seeing that emotion from you at the end really reminded us all how much the club means. It was needed!
Enjoy your evening! Another big game in a few days! #OneOfOurOwn

Martin’s father, Alvin Martin, played 598 times for West Ham and is known as a legend at the club. Following the match, David was in tears and went to the stands to embrace his dad, a moment which was felt deeply by Hammers fans.
You have made my year. I saw your dad’s career from start to finish. You must have been bombarded with it as a kid. Now, when you’re sitting down for XMas dinner, you can both talk about your West Ham careers. Marvellous day. 👍⚒⚒⚒

Martin’s performance was an emotional experience for all associated with the club and it was a moment to be cherished. It seems as though Martin’s excellent performance will see him retain his place until Lukasz Fabianski returns in a couple of weeks and Hammers fans will have no issue with that whatsoever.
