Hammers goalkeeper Roy Carroll has injured himself in a freak training ground accident and will miss Sunday’s game against Middlesbrough.

Northern Ireland International Carroll was collecting balls during training when he caught his left foot in the goal net.

Shaka Hislop will now get his first opportunity to start this season following his return to Upton Park from Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, 24 year old shot stopper Stephen Bywater, who was on loan at Coventry has been recalled by West Ham with immediate effect.

Coventry manager Micky Adams said: ‘We’re obviously very disappointed Stephen has been recalled but we have to get on with it. It leaves us very short of cover but it gives a great opportunity to Clayton, who is obviously very experienced’.
