West Ham man in talks over potential career switch

|

Ryan Fredericks has represented England at Under 19 level, but could be set to switch allegiances to Scotland.

The West Ham right-back has held initial talks with Scotland national team manager Steve Clarke and said to be open to representing the Tartan Army.

Scotland have immense competition at left back with Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney, but with Clarke’s current options on the right being Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Palmer and Kilmarnock’s Stephen O’Donnell, Fredericks could realistically become a regular starter.

The likelihood of this happening would also be strengthened if he could secure more regular game time in a West Ham shirt going forward.

He has often been kept out of the side by Pablo Zabaleta since joining West Ham last summer but his performances towards the end of the season, especially the one against Southampton which earned a rating of 10 on WhoScored, could see Manuel Pellegrini give him an opportunity to become a regular feature in the starting line up.

Fredericks will be aware that England have the likes of Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in his position, something which could come into the 26-year-old’s thinking when considering his international future.

Regardless of Fredericks’ decision, he won’t be able to feature in Scotland’s imminent Euro 2020 qualifiers against Belgium and Cyprus, but if he does take up Clarke’s offer he could still become an integral part of their campaign.
