Jay Mingi’s time as part of our academy is nearing its end, as Football Insider understands the highly-rated youngster will be released at the end of the season.

The 18-year-old has been a part of the Academy of Football for more than a decade, having become a Hammer at the age of seven.

Fine work as part of our U16s and U18s then saw the defensive midfielder offered a two-year scholarship at the start of the 2017/18 season, but a professional deal does not appear on the cards.

Football Insider note that the board’s reluctance to offer a new contract stems from the teenager failing to break into Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team plans, and is still waiting for his senior debut.

Mingi has also found minutes harder to come bye this season in the youth ranks, with just three outings in the U18 Premier League, and his final appearance came in December as part of the FA Youth Cup side which lost on penalties to Brighton.

The towering youngster may not be without a club for long, at least, as Charlton have offered the 6 ft 3 prospect a trial, and he featured for the Addicks’ U23s on Tuesday against Burnley.

Altogether, Mingi made 26 appearances at the Under 18 level for West Ham, with a hand in one goal.
