Two men have been arrested and are being held in police custody over the stabbing of Hammers defender Calum Davenport and his mother at their family home in Bedfordshire.

Davenport, 26, was attacked on Friday night in Kempston, near Bedford, and had emergency surgery for stab wounds on both legs.

The centre-back is said to be in a serious but stable condition in Bedford Hospital with his family at his side. His mother is said to have made a good recovery.

The residential road in which the incident occurred has been cordoned off for forensic examination, which was said to be ‘covered in a lot of blood’ after the attack. Door to door police questioning is taking place.

A man, 25, has was arrested in Derby on suspicion of attempted murder. Another man, 19, remains in police custody.

A West Ham spokesman said: ‘The club’s medical team are in contact with hospital staff.

‘The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the on-going investigation, no further information will be released.’

All at Vital West Ham wish Calum well into a speedy recovery and back to playing football.
