West Ham striker Carlton Cole and Spurs’ Jermain Defoe struck up a good partnership against Holland last month and he wants to see more of this for England.

From Vital England:

There were not many plus points from the game with Holland recently, from an English point of view anyway! Coming back from 2-0 down at half time to do so obviously was, but the strike partnership that Cole and Defoe were able to forge in the 2nd half time spent together was a definite plus.

Cole really had a good game – Fabio Capello likes his target man and he did this very well, with the advantage that he has over his rival for such a position being that he has good speed to go with his mobility and ability.

The striker is happy with his international progress to date, which has seen him win 3 caps so far – as he told sky sports – and he now wants more of a chance to build on this link-up with Defoe: ‘Jermain and I work really well together because I’m the big man and he’s the small striker. He wants to get into the box and avoid the physical stuff up front.

‘He wants to get in the box while I like to get stuck in so we do complement each other really well.

‘He’s got a bright future with the England team and I hope I can follow in his footsteps.’

Without a doubt, as things currently stand, Defoe is the leader in the race to act as the goalscoring striker for England but Cole has a very good chance of forcing his way, not only into the squad on a continued basis but potentially as the target man playing off Wayne Rooney?
