Transfer pursuit may bring back painful memories; it’d be worth it if West Ham manage to do it – Opinion

Wherever you decide to turn and look, there is always a story regarding West Ham United’s pursuit of Maxi Gomez.

However, the narrative does not appear to be the same with everyone as it is one that seems to have a different path with whoever is asked about it.

The transfer saga regarding the Uruguayan forward is one that has been going on for what feels like a lifetime as we were allegedly close to pulling off the coup last January before Celta de Vigo inconveniently pulled the plug on a deal because of their relegation fears.

The whole saga looks to have picked off once again this summer and Football.London have perfectly summed it up as one moment we have allegedly had a bid accepted then a report from Spain stated that we had an offer rejected.

Most recently, our chances of landing Gomez this summer are thought to have been given a boost as Valencia are believed to be giving up their own chase for him as they are thought to be fed up of trying to deal with Celta, whilst Fichajes have stated that we have already agreed to contract terms (although that seems debatable) – and we must continue in our efforts to sign him as it could provide us with massive dividends.

Let’s face it, West Ham are not strangers to long-drawn-out transfer sagas. The episodes trying to land the likes of Carlos Bacca and Alexandre Lacazette continue to haunt many of us, however, we proved we could get a deal over the line for Felipe Anderson last summer in a similar situation.

A deal was always unlikely to happen until the Copa America was over and getting it done extremely early in the transfer window would have been ambitious as Celta know their striker is in hot demand and that they will be able to encourage a bidding war for him.

There is surely no doubt that Gomez would improve us in the final third almost immediately; the 22-year-old scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 35 appearances in La Liga last season, according to Who Scored.

He was the 13th highest goalscorer in the division despite his side finishing in 17th, just four points above the relegation zone and managed to hit the back of the net more often than anybody that we have currently in our ranks.

If we manage to do the same as we did with Anderson and continue to push on with it, then there is every chance that we will be able to get our main forward target at the third time of asking.
