Transfer News: West Ham snubbed derisory offer for exit-seeking fringe man in January

|

West Ham fans enjoyed a fairly busy final few days of the transfer window at the end of last month, and the additions of both Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen both marked impressive pieces of business. However, the Irons could have seen a few more players out of the door.

One of those who certainly could have made an exit in the final days of the mid-season window as the experienced defender Winston Reid. The 31-year-old has had his career ravaged by injuries over the last few seasons, and it seems he’s set for a departure from the club sooner or later, even after missing out on a January exit.

According to Football Insider, the Hammers received a loan offer for Reid from Charlton Athletic in the Championship, but the offer that the Irons’ hierarchy had to deal with a shambolic one, as it’s been reported that they were only willing to cover a tiny fraction of his wages.

The Hammers rejected the offer immediately, describing it as derisory as Lee Bowyer’s side were offering to cover less than £10,000 of the player’s £70,000 per/week wages, and who can blame the Hammers for turning down such a shockingly low offer for their man.

The article states:

‘Charlton made a move for Reid at the end of January but were only willing to contribute less than a seventh of his £70,000-a-week wages to take him for the rest of the season.’

‘The Hammers considered the offer – worth less than £10,000-a-week – as derisory for such a proven performer and dismissed it immediately.’

Has Winston Reid played his last game for West Ham?

Yes

No

‘More viable offers have emerged from the United States, and there is an expectation Reid will find a club. with the MLS window set to open formally on Wednesday.’

‘Reid has also held talks with DC United and Sporting Kansas as he looks to the other side of the Atlantic to get his career back on track.’
