Opinion: The rise of West Ham fringe man is one of few positives this season

|

Coming into the start of the 2019/20 season, not many West Ham fans would have had Robert Snodgrass down as a part of their best eleven, yet at the moment it looks like the Scottish midfield man is something close to being undroppable.

The likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini would have been in the Irons’ thinking ahead of Snodgrass back in August. However, we’re now in February and the impressive veteran winger-cum-midfield Snodgrass has become a star.

The former Norwich and Hull City man has been in spectacular form for the club this season, scoring five goals and assisting a further four in 15 starts and five substitute appearances over the course of the Premier League season so far, and that’s not to be sniffed at.

The stats behind his goals and assists are where things get impressive, though, as he’s averaging 1.1 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.9 crosses per game (WhoScored), and without the Scot, the supporters would find themselves in a worse position than they already are at the moment.

He’s the club’s second top scorer this season in the league behind Sebastien Haller by just one goal, and his form is certainly something to be pleased with. The Irons currently sit 18th, and if they are to stay up you’d imagine that they’ll be set to heavily rely upon the efforts of Snodgrass from midfield.

Is Snodgrass in the Hammer of the Year running?

Yes

No

The season is a long one, and there is still a lot of time for the Hammers to kick on and find a few new positives, which could come in the form of new signings Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen, but for now, the one major thing that the Irons have been able to rely upon has been the driving runs and goalscoring form of their Scottish creator.
