Transfer News: West Ham hit stumbling block in pursuit of defensive reinforcements

|

The 38 goals that West ham have conceded this season has them in 3rd as the Premier League’s leakiest side. Only Norwich City at the foot of the table and Aston Villa in 16th have posted worse defensive records so far this season that the Irons, and David Moyes is looking for defensive reinforcements.

It appears to be obvious that the club needs to bring in a new central defender, and the sooner they can bring someone in to try and turn their fortunes around the better, especially seeing as the transfer window is set to close in just four days time.

It does look like efforts are being made, though, as the Hammers have had a bid for USA and New York Red Bulls’ defender Aaron Long rejected, according to Sky Sports. The 27-year-old was named MLS defender of the year in 2018, and now he could be set to make a move to England.

For this move to go ahead, a lot of things will have to fall into place, though. For one, getting a work permit will be difficult, but the offer that comes from the London club simply has to improve, as the derisory offer that the Premier League side tabled just isn’t good enough.

According to Sky:

‘West Ham have had an initial loan offer for USA international centre-back Aaron Long rejected by New York Red Bulls.’

‘The Hammers made a $500,000 (£382,000) offer to loan Long until the end of the season with a $4.5m (£3.4m) option to buy him outright in the summer.’

‘Long, who was named as Major League Soccer’s Defender of the Year in 2018, was also the subject of interest from West Ham last summer, but the 27-year-old was unable to secure a work permit.’
