After the win against Swansea City, last weekend, ended the Hammers run of five consecutive defeats, the West Ham support were hoping that the side could make it back-to-back wins against relegation threatened Sunderland.
For most of the game that looked as it was going to be the case for the Hammers support that travelled in their numbers to the Stadium of Light.
However, a late goal saw Sunderland snatch a point and with West Ham reduced to 10-men, late-on, it even looked as if West Ham might be beaten by the side who sit at the foot of the Premier league.
The Hammers got off to the best possible start in this fixture when, with just five minutes on the clock, Andre Ayew gave them the lead. The summer signing from Swansea was perfectly position to stab home the ball, past Jordan Pickford, after a volley from Andy Carroll fell at his feet.
Sunderland, who hadn`t scored for over eleven-and-a-half hours, levelled the game in the twenty-sixth minute when Wahbi Khazri scored direct from a corner.
Going into the half-time break all-square, West Ham were to retake the lead two minutes after the break when, from a Robert Snodgrass corner, James Collins was on hand to head home.
The three points looked to be heading back to East London until a dramatic period of stoppage time. Sam Byram, already on a yellow card received another and a subsequent red-card and our hosts sensed they could get at least a point.
That belief was realised when in the ninetieth minute Fabio Borini was on hand to score the equaliser from the edge of the box.
With ten minutes of stoppage time announced, courtesy of a bad injury to Sunderland`s Billy Jones, the Hammers were forced to fight a desperate rear-guard action to hang on as Sunderland looked for the winner.
But hang on they did and the spoils, on the day, were shared.
