Report: West Ham table offer for exciting versatile int’l; could be available for £13.6m

Although strikers might have been at the top of the transfer list for West Ham United this summer, that does not appear to have stopped the Hammers from looking at other areas of the field to improve ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Indeed, it would seem Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos have identified an additional need in defence as we prepare to build on last season’s efforts.

According to a report by Record (via Sport Witness), West Ham are thought to have tabled a bid for America MX’s Edson Alvarez this summer.

The report does not state how much we have offered for the Mexico international, however, it is suggested an offer of around $17million (£13.6m) could be enough to convince the Liga MX outfit to part company with him; a figure in today’s financial climate that could be considered a steal with all the potential he has to offer.

We are not the only side thought to be interested in Alvarez though, with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ajax both said to be keen on the 21-year-old – with the Dutch side having already made an offer of €15m (£13.4m).

Record reported that it would essentially come down to the club who decides to pay the most money for him and it is hardly a surprise to hear that there is so much interest in him.

Alvarez is extremely versatile as he can operate anywhere across the backline, whilst he has also earned rave reviews from fansite Viva Liga MX for his ability to play in front of the defence as a defensive midfielder. They claim he is exceptionally gifted when it comes down to his ability with the ball and are equally impressed with his tackling.

Valued at £6.45m by Transfermarkt, he is a full Mexico international and has shown plenty of promise with his performances for his country in the Gold Cup and will be looking to help them lift the trophy when they meet the United States of America in the final on Sunday night.
