Report: West Ham attempted to sign £11m-rated powerhouse from PL rival

West Ham reportedly attempted to sign Victor Wanyama from London rivals Tottenham in the final days of the English transfer window.

The Express report that the Hammers made a move to sign the out of favour midfielder from Spurs before the closure of the transfer window two weeks ago, however, a deal fell through.

Wanyama is now heavily linked with a move to Club Brugge as The Evening Standard claim that the powerhouse of a midfielder is in talks with the Belgian side about a potential move in the final days of the European transfer window.

The Kenyan international joined Spurs in 2016 for a reported fee of £11m according to BBC Sport, and although the former Southampton midfielder impressed in his first year with the north London side, Wanyama has found himself slowly falling down the pecking order at the club.

Injury problems have restricted Wanyama’s game time in the past two seasons, and the recent arrival of Tanguy Ndombele for a club-record fee at Spurs means that the 28-year-old midfielder will find it harder to get first-team minutes.

A move for the Tottenham midfielder is seemingly an unsurprising move from West Ham given the rivalry between the two clubs, with supporters from both teams often seeing their clash in the Premier League as one of the heated in the season.

Yet Wanyama wouldn’t be the first player to make the trip across the divide from Tottenham to West Ham.

Former striker Bobby Zamora made the switch from north to east London in 2004 following a poor season with Spurs, however, now 38-year-old attacker became something of a cult hero for the Hammers, helping back to the top flight in the 2004/05 season and a year later guiding them to an FA Cup final.

Other notable players to represent both clubs include Jermain Defoe, Teddy Sheringham and Jimmy Greaves, whom all made important contributions to the London-based teams.
