Report: Key West Ham player urges squad to improve performances

|

Lukasz Fabianski has voiced his opinion on West Ham’s recent performances in the Premier League.

Speaking to West Ham’s official website, the Polish goalkeeper seemingly warned his teammates that performances need to start picking up following a poor start to the league season.

Although the Hammers have points on the board following a 1-1 draw with Brighton, the east London side started the season in an embarrassing manner, losing 5-0 at home to reigning champions Manchester City, with the loudest cheer on the day being a sixth goal for Pep Guardiola’s side ruled out by VAR.

Fabianski said: “Quality-wise, we have a very decent team and squad, but it is about performances. You cannot only look at the names of the players in the team. You have to perform every single week. That is what we are going to be judged by. It is all about the performances.”

The Hammers travel to Watford on Saturday, who have endured an even rougher start to the new Premier League season following two defeats that on paper the Hornets seemingly looked the favourites, and this should be the game West Ham aim to up their performances given the low morale around Javi Garcia’s side.

Despite urging his side to improve their overall performance, Fabianski admitted that the defence improved greatly in the game against Brighton compared to the City match, with xG stats from Understat proving this by showing that the Seagulls had an xG against West Ham of 2.4.

Fabianski said: “It was a tough game. We focused more on defending than attacking in the first half then in the second half the game became more equal. They created more clear chances but we managed to score a goal and get a draw against a tough side.

“We tried to put more pressure on the players on the ball. That was one of the issues we struggled with against City. It is almost impossible to do it for 90 minutes but there were times when we put pressure on Brighton and that helped us defend better.”
