Opinion: Whilst the door might open for West Ham to sign Callum Wilson, they shouldn’t necessarily go through it

|

We might have an advantage when it comes to getting him, but the question is, should we even be pursuing him in the first place?

Because it would be an awfully big gamble if it were to all backfire.

An article in the Daily Mail details one key advantage that West Ham, amongst other clubs will have when it comes to signing AFC Bournemouth frontman Callum Wilson this summer instead of letting him move to Tottenham Hotspur, and that’s playing time.

The 28-year-old, scorer of 41 Premier League goals across his five seasons in the top flight, is likely going to cost someone as much as £30m to sign him this summer, and the prospect of paying that much for someone to sit on the bench behind Harry Kane might put the club off, and the idea of playing second fiddle might put Wilson off.

This leaves the door open for a club like us to come in and swoop for him, and whilst that might sound promising, there’s still one thing that bothers me about him, and that’s his injury record.

Would you welcome Wilson for £30m?

Yes

No

Since Bournemouth were promoted to the Premier League, he has suffered three major injuries that are enough to put me off paying that much for someone who could be out of the line-up at any moment.

Whilst I spoke yesterday about being ambitious and ruthless, we need to be sensible as well with transfers, especially with something as risky as injuries. I’ve seen today that Danny Welbeck, someone with his own injury issues in the past, is being linked with a £5.5m move, and whilst the levels of production might not be the same, I’d much rather us go down that route than vastly overpay for someone like Wilson who could be out of action before you know it.

What about you? Would you pay that much for someone as risky as Wilson?
