Opinion: West Ham need to show their ruthless side as Bellegarde deal set to go down to the wire

Not going down without a fight.

That appears to be the mantra that one of West Ham United’s competitors in the transfer market are going with over the battle for the signature of Jean-Ricner Bellegarde. A report last week from Foot Mercato claimed that we along with Fiorentina were both interested in signing the 22-year-old French midfielder.

And according to a report from Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham are frantically fighting off attention of the Italian side in order to get the signing of Bellegarde over the line, who have also got their eyes on Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira and PSG’s Leandro Paredes.

I think this could act as a bit of a ‘make or break’ moment for the Hammers this summer. Having scooped £113m in prize money this season, it’s not as if we’re going to be short of money to spend, and if there’s a player that we want, we have to show the fortitude to barge other clubs out of the way to get them.

How much will West Ham spend this summer?

More than £50m

Less than £50m

I’ve spoken recently about the notion of David Moyes being given the opportunity to put his stamp on things at the club, and a transfer like this is a perfect example of that idea in action. If Moyes believes that this man could help us, and let’s face it given the number of goals we conceded last season, we could do with an extra body in front of the backline, then we shouldn’t be bullied by other clubs.

Let’s put a marker down for not only this transfer, but also for any that we want to make the rest of the summer. Let’s show some real ambition and not be second best when it comes to the players that we want.
