Opinion: West Ham’s recent statement of intent is something for the fans to get behind

|

West Ham United fans had a right treat on Sunday evening. When the hour mark came round at Priestfield in Kent, the Hammers will not have been at all happy as they were being held at 0-0 by League One Gillingham, but their 2-0 win was still a solid one.

The Irons have been left embarrassed by teams in the domestic cups over the last couple of years, and this game could so easily have been one of those. However, the two Pablo’s, Zabaleta and Fornals, stepped up with second-half goals, and after seeing the strength of the side David Moyes put out in the FA Cup 3rd round, the fans should be delighted.

Since making it to the FA Cup final in 2006, the Hammers have only managed to get passed the 5th round of the competition and into the quarter-finals on two occasions, and on both of those, they fell before the last four, so giving the fans a cup run to truly enjoy is long overdue.

That’s exactly why the reception and the reaction that Moyes is getting and should continue to get for the way he set up on Sunday is positive. The Scottish gaffer could quite easily have thrown together a blend of fringe players and inexperienced youngsters, taken a beating and come out with the usual spiel of wanting to focus on the Premier League.

Will Moyes turn our season around?

Yes

No

That was not at all the case, though. Moyes went into this game and made just three changes from his side’s demolition of Bournemouth before going onto continue his perfect start to his second spell at the Stratford club, with the Irons now into the 4th round of the cup and 16th in the league after scoring 6 and shipping none in their first two games under him.
