Opinion: West Ham should use caution if they are seriously considering signing World Cup winner

|

When it comes to levels of likelihood of it happening, I’m putting this slightly more probable than us signing Gonzalo Higuain, but still far away from the certainty that Mark Noble will get a statue when he retires.

Well at least in my mind anyway, especially given who we’re supposedly up against for his signature.

According to a report in The Daily Express, West Ham United have shown an interest in World Cup winner Mario Götze. The 28-year-old is a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund, and we have reportedly ‘made an enquiry’ about his services, with clubs like Monaco and Roma also chasing him.

On the surface of it, this seems like an incredibly smart move. With two of our regular attackers reportedly up for sale in Manuel Lanzini and Felipe Anderson with Grady Diangana also set to follow, we’re going to need some extra bodies in attack, and to get one of them in on a free would be a great start.

Should West Ham sign Mario Gotze?

Yes

No

Götze is a player that would offer a high level of versatility as well, being able to play across the front line, if we carry on the 4-2-3-1 formation that we played for large parts last season then we can play him anywhere in the front three and arguably up top as well.

The one small concern that I’d have, and it goes back to what I said about Wilshere and that’s his injury record. Whilst some of the risk would be offset by the low transfer fee, you’d hope that the wages would also carry that over, ideally with a ‘pay as you play’ contract that would give us some leeway if things don’t go right for him once more.

So long story short, yes bring him in. But make sure that it’s done in the right way.
