Opinion: West Ham must temper expectations despite impressive weekend win

|

West Ham fans will be loving the way that their side are being painted in the media at the moment. The Hammers are being looked at as one of the sides that could break into the top six this season, and whilst they weren’t in the argument six games ago at the start of the season, they cannot get carried away.

Since the Irons lost at home to Manchester City, a crushing 5-0 defeat, Manuel Pellegrini seems to have got the bit between his teeth and his side is now undefeated in their last five games, which culminated in the weekend’s 2-0 home win over Manchester United.

However, with the media now waxing lyrical over the Hammers’ chances of breaking into the top six and playing European football next season, the fans and the club need to work out where they can go from here, as the season is a very long one and with 32 games to go you simply cannot call it yet.

Over the last few weeks, Harry Redknapp has backed West Ham and Leicester for a top-six finish, as per talkSPORT, then, after the United win, Aaron Cresswell publicly spoke about his side having a big team mentality, via The Standard.

You’ve also got to add in Football.London’s take on this too, as they’ve also come out with a similar article backing the Hammers as a side who are ‘the real deal’ and can challenge for the top six. We’re not saying that the Irons aren’t going to make the top six, but keeping calm and getting on with the football is key.

No side has a God-given right to finish in the top six, and West Ham are no different. Performances over the course of 38 games is what gets you there, and whilst the first six games have shown the right signs, there is a lot of time for things to go wrong, and Pellegrini will be well aware of that.
