Opinion: Recent West Ham United departure wasn’t given a fair chance to prove his worth to us

|

Not given a fair chance.

That’s my main thought when it comes to the club allowing forward Jordan Hugill to leave the club and sign for Norwich this week. However one former Premier League player thinks that he was never going to be in a position to be given that chance.

Speaking to Football Insider, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson talked about the move, and said that it was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for the 28-year-old, with so much going on above him that he never really stood a decent chance of making a career for himself at the London Stadium:

“Sometimes you are a victim of circumstance. A team can be struggling and a new manager comes in and things do not work out. Credit to Hugill because he was not looking like he is going to play under David Moyes at West Ham and he has taken the opportunity to leave.”

To some extent I agree with Robinson, as I have been explaining recently David Moyes needs to be given the chance to create his own team in East London, so if he didn’t think he was up to it, then there’s no real emotional attachment to letting him leave.

Did Hugill get a fair chance at West Ham?

Yes

No

My only concern though, is that whilst Hugill has played under Moyes before during the Scot’s first tenure with us, that was over two years ago, and things have changed since then, so I feel in this case that Hugill deserved a little bit more of a chance, his form at QPR last season certainly warranted it.

We had two squads playing in pre-season games yesterday, are you telling me that there wasn’t a place for him in either of them to show the management team what he’s capable of after his recent loan spell?

I just feel like in a situation like this, Hugill didn’t really get the treatment that you could argue he deserved.
