Opinion: Opponents midweek escapades must make West Ham the weekend favourites

|

It’s almost a year to the day that West Ham dispatched the visiting Manchester United 3-1 in the 2018/19 Premier League season, and tomorrow they will be given a chance to repeat the feat. This time, though, the Hammers are a stronger side with a goal-scoring forward.

That man is, of course, Sebastien Haller, and it will be an interesting battle to see how the Red Devils cope with the powerful Frenchman, although we have a feeling Harry Maguire will be tasked with keeping him as quiet as possible, especially after the £80m defender was left out on Thursday.

That Thursday game against Astana in the Europa League will surely come as a massive detriment to Man United. United went into that game with plenty of players being rotated and left out, although their squad looks very thin ahead of the trip to The London Stadium.

The Evening Standard have had a stab at predicting the lineup that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be going with on Sunday, and they’ve obviously had to leave out the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw, but have included Daniel James despite the fact the Welshman will face a late fitness test.

Having that particular four out of action would come as a massive blow, and after Marcus Rashford and Nemanja Matic, two of those selected in The Standard’s predicted eleven, played the full 90 minutes on Thursday, the chances are there will be tired legs as the Red Devils travel to London.

Meanwhile, West Ham have got their own selection problems. Arthur Masuaku is suspended after picking up two yellows against Aston Villa on Monday night, but all in all, with a fresh squad and playing in front of the home crowd, West Ham simply have to be made the favourites as United come to town.
