Opinion: Highly-rated Serie A winger would not be a good signing for the Hammers

|

Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic is apparently on West Ham’s radar this January, but he would not be a good signing for the Hammers despite having an illustrious career.

The 32-year-old Croatia international has an excellent CV, playing for the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and now Inter Milan. Now, according to Spanish news outlet Fichajes (via BBC Sport gossip column), Perisic’s next club could be in London.

With several other clubs interested, like Everton and Wolfsburg, this would be a hard signing to pull off. However, despite his obvious talents, the winger would not be a good fit in this current West Ham squad.

The former Champions League winner has won eight major titles with various clubs in both Germany and Italy and has scored 131 goals and produced 100 assists in 512 games throughout his career.

However with all that in mind, his performances have begun to drop off as he slowly grows older. At 32 years of age, Perisic is no longer the player he used to be – and for the wages he would cost, it would not be worth it for the Hammers.

As shown at Inter Milan over the past couple of seasons, he has the ability to produce something special on his day. But Perisic does not have the legs to keep up with the playing style Moyes has implemented into this current West Ham squad.

A high-energy and hard-working philosophy wouldn’t suit his current playing abilities and as we have seen with the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, it doesn’t always work when one player drops off.

On top of this, it goes against the transfer protocols that Moyes has succeeded with during his second spell at West Ham. Instead of signing ‘big name’ players just because they have succeeded elsewhere, doesn’t always mean that they will be a great addition to the Hammers.

With this in mind, it would be an unwise and surprising move from the West Ham staff if they were to sign Ivan Perisic in January. Whilst he may have the experience to help the squad, Moyes is better off investing the club’s budget elsewhere in this window.
