West Ham are said to be leading the race to sign Nathaniel Clyne, report Goal, and the rumour has been met with mixed reaction from Hammers fans on Twitter.
The Hammers are believed to be preparing a bid in the region of £10-11million, with Goal suggesting that Liverpool are willing to listen to offers of over £10m – but may hold out for £15m.
The transfer would take most fans by surprise, since we already have two first-team right-backs in Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta, the latter recently signing a new contract.
However, Clyne does offer a wealth of Premier League experience and at 28 could be reaching his peak. Some fans remained unconvinced by Fredericks, who although looked promising in the latter part of the season, has suffered with injury problems for much of his West Ham career.
Bournemouth are also interested in securing Clyne on a permanent deal, having secured his services on loan for the second half of the season – which could cause his transfer fee to rise.
As a result, there is split opinion on the possible transfer. Whilst some believe he is a good player, the right-back position is not a priority and funds could be spent better elsewhere.
Here are a few fan reactions on Twitter to the news:
Would be a good signing however Fredericks did enough to convince me he would be our firat choice RB

We don’t need another right back

Dont get this. Liverpool will want decent money (£10m+ prob) & we’ve just given Zaba an extension (& have Johnson coming thru). Doesn’t seem like a priority position when we have limited funds.

This is the sort of signings we will get. players that are past it or a position we don’t need anyone in
