West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has encouraged Carlton Cole to make the most of his run in the side and take his opportunity whilst the other strikers return to fitness. Curbishley told the club’s official website:

‘Carlton was excellent at Portsmouth and I’d like to think that he won over a few more people – including the West Ham fans – who again saw a little bit more of him.’ Which is fair comment really; whilst Cole’s unpopularity may be justified by his limited ability, the faithful could be a little more supportive without breaking sweat. However, Curbs may have been taking the biscuit by suggesting ‘When I was at Charlton Athletic he had a successful loan spell with us.’ If five goals in 22 appearances is successful for a striker, we’ve got problems.

However, Carlton did have his best game for the club at the weekend and will get the opportunity to shine against Coventry in front of the Sky cameras on Tuesday night in the Carling Cup:

‘At Coventry, Carlton will probably be our only available striker. We’re taking a lot of fans to Coventry City for the Carling Cup and we’re going to treat the tie with the importance it deserves. We’re going for it because we want to get through to the next round.’

Carpe diem, Carlton.
