3 clearances, 3.3 aerials won: Why West Ham must retain services of 6ft 3 talisman – opinion

|

West Ham United fans understand how impressive Tomas Soucek has been.

The Czech Republic international recently extended his loan spell at the London Stadium from his homeland side Slavia Prague until the end of the 2019/20 campaign, following the temporary suspension of the Premier League season.

With this in mind, I believe the club must go one step further and secure his services on a permanent basis as soon as the curtains are drawn on what has been a forgetful year for the club.

One thing is for sure, West Ham must move forward. To do that, we need some reassurances and certainties. David Gold and David Sullivan must prioritise securing the services of Soucek as soon as is practically possible.

Even though the 6ft 3′ defensive midfielder has started just three Premier League games this season, Soucek has made a lasting impression, having swapped the red and white for the famous claret and blue.

The London Stadium faithful have been pleading for him to stay on next season. His energetic and workaholic performance against Liverpool illustrated to all us what sort of a player that he is and what he can become.

Do you want to sign Soucek permanently?

Yes

No

From the four games that he has featured in, Soucek has managed to average three clearances per game, two tackles and 3.3 aerial battles won, as per Whoscored. For a player that has arrived from a less competitive league and to accumulate statistics like that, is an impressive feat.

Our owners have the unwanted reputation of being as tight as a Yorkshireman. On this occasion, we need to move quickly, when the time is right, to tie Soucek down in East London in order to move forward as a squad and as a team that wants to be competitive.
