Report: West Ham ‘more than ready’ to sell 5 ft 7 ace who has played 35 minutes since October

|

West Ham United appear ‘more than ready’ to offload midfielder Jack Wilshere during the summer transfer market, according to The Athletic.

Wilshere has struggled relentlessly to establish himself as a key member of the Irons first-team since his free transfer in 2018 at the expiration of his Arsenal contract, having featured in claret and blue on just 18 occasions across all competitions.

Injuries ruined his chances of becoming a Gunners icon, having been widely lauded as the future of England’s midfield and a captain in the making for club and country following his graduation from the academy in north London.

Sadly, those injuries followed him to east London, where Wilshere has sat out more than 50 games and counting, with over 400 days spent in the physio’s room nursing various ankle and groin issues.

West Ham chiefs are now keen to cut our loses on a player who is our second-highest earner on a £100,000-per-week deal but has offered next to nothing, with just the one goal and assist plus two yellow cards to his name.

Finding someone willing to take Wilshere off our hands in the aftermath of a global pandemic is proving to be a challenging task, as can be expected, leaving Irons chiefs in a position where it is likely the 28-year-old will remain at the London Stadium for the final year of his contract.

Wilshere had managed to resume full training six months ago following a lengthy spell out with a groin injury but has only featured twice since – totalling just 35 minutes since last October – with boss David Moyes calling on the 34-cap international for two substitute appearances following the restart in July.

The 5 ft 7 ace had aimed to kick off his 2020/21 campaign by featuring against Charlton Athletic during the Carabao Cup tie on Tuesday night, but The Athletic note Wilshere rolled his ankle in training the day before which ultimately meant he missed Saturday’s trip to Arsenal as well.
