Although the transfer window is currently closed, speculation is still linking West Ham United Football Club with the acquisition of a defender.

Of course, with the transfer window closed, any additions have to be players who are free-agents, which applies to the defender on the Hammers radar.

According to the BBC Sport, the defender West Ham United are after is Patrice Evra.

Evra, now 36-years-of-age, is a free-agent after leaving the French club Marseille after an unsavoury incident.

The Frenchman, who had a distinguished career with Manchester United, left Marseille by mutual consent after kicking one of his one supporters in the head before a Europa League fixture.

Since the incident, back in November, Evra has not played. However, West Ham United view Evra as the ideal replacement for Arthur Musuaku who is suspended, courtesy of that spitting incident in the FA Cup tie against Wigan.

Our referenced source is implying that West Ham will offer Evra a contract until the end of the current season.

Here at Vital West Ham we`ll keep an eye on the situation and report back accordingly.
