West Ham linked with 12-cap international that could ensure fan-favourite leaves – opinion

West Ham United are reportedly being proactive in their efforts to replace Pablo Zabaleta, with the Express linking the Hammers with a move for Millwall’s Mahlon Romeo.

Like our Argentine, the 12-cap Antigua and Barbuda international is set to walk out on his current side when the season ends as his contract at The Den expires on June 30.

The potential to sign the 23-year-old on a free is also said to have alerted Rangers to his situation, as Steven Gerrard’s side look to bring in competition for James Tavernier.

Scouts from both the Scottish side and the Hammers are claimed to have watched the right-back this term, and would have seen the London-born defender turn in regular impressive performances during his 35-game season so far.

Romeo would, though, be unlikely to present an improvement on who we currently have on offer to Manuel Pellegrini, if the club can retain fan-favourite Zabaleta for next season and with Ryan Fredericks starting to come into his own with the more game time he gets under his belt.

On a free, however, we cannot go too wrong in signing the Millwall man as back up in the summer, as that is how Fredericks joined us upon his departure from Fulham.
