West Ham fail in attempt to beat Premier League rivals to £20m midfielder

|

West Ham have been unsuccessful in their cheeky attempt to hijack Arsenal’s proposed move for Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez.

The 25-year-old is expected to leave the Spanish champions during the January transfer window but a potential switch to the Premier League has been delayed as Unai Emery’s side try to negotiate a deal for the Spain international.

Arsenal would prefer a loan deal but Barcelona are keen to sell immediately, demanding around £20m, and West Ham looked to jump to the front of the queue, according to The Sun, but were rejected by the player himself.

Suarez is determined to move to the Emirates Stadium to play under Emery, who he shone for during a loan stint at Sevilla, and it swiftly became clear that West Ham had no chance of convincing the player to reconsider his stance.

The playmaker has made just four appearances for Ernesto Valverde’s side in all competitions this season but all of those opportunities have come off the bench, with Suarez accumulating just 41 minutes of action.
