West Ham expected to return to failed January target that Pellegrini has long admired – report

We might have failed to add his services to the squad in the winter, but Jonjo Shelvey has again been linked with a move to West Ham, this time by the Northern Echo.

They are suggesting that we will rekindle our failed interest in the Newcastle man when the current season draws to a close, as the former England international has continued to be shunned by Rafa Benitez and will likely now move on from Tyneside.

His hopes of earning a recall to the national squad under Gareth Southgate is said to be playing a part in the midfielder’s hopes of a future elsewhere, as his continued absence from the first-team at St James’ Park has put his international aspirations firmly on the back burner.

Had it not been for his Spanish head coach stepping in the way, as he feared failing to replace the 6-cap Three Lions ace in January, the 27-year-old would likely have completed his switch to the London Stadium over the winter.

Should those same fears return in the summer, one of the duo is expected to leave – likely the manager, as he will not be signing a new contract without the promise of further funds.

Manuel Pellegrini’s long-term admiration of Shelvey’s talents is also put down as a reason why the deal would be an attractive option for the Charlton product, as the boss sees his deep-lying playmaker abilities as the perfect partner for Declan Rice.
