Fabio Capello has seen fit to include two West Ham players in his 24-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers. As we mentioned on Sunday it would have been three if Robert Green wasn`t scheduled for a minor operation in the coming week.
Matthew Upson returns to the squad after missing out on the friendly against Hungary. After the dismal efforts of England at the World Cup I have to admit I thought Upson might have missed his chance to cement a place for the European Championships.
As it is with Terry missing due to injury Upson becomes the most experienced centre-back in the squad. I would hope that gives him a great chance of making the starting eleven but Capello is a difficult man to predict.
Carlton Cole also gets a spot after being picked but not playing against Hungary. So far this season West Ham haven`t being doing Cole any favours with our 4-5-1 formation. It`s difficult to rifle in the goals if you spend most of your time chasing down defenders and lost causes punted over the top. I`m doubtful that Cole will get a chance to step on the pitch.
The full squad is:
Goalkeepers: Scott Carson, Ben Foster, Joe Hart
Defenders: Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Kieran Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Matthew Upson
Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Adam Johnson, James Milner, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ashley Young
Forwards: Darren Bent, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney
England meet Bulgaria at Wembley on September 3rd followed by a trip to Basel to face Switzerland on September 7th.
