Unbeaten: West Ham’s development squad are quietly having an incredible season – Opinion

|

It’s so far been quite an impressive season for West Ham, and we’re not just talking about the senior squad.

Whilst Manuel Pellegrini’s side currently sit in the Premier League table with seven points from the opening four games as of writing this with two wins against the likes of Watford and Norwich City, the Hammers development team in Premier League 2 have also begun the season brightly.

10 goals and an unbeaten start see Dmitri Halajko’s exciting crop of youngsters currently sit in second in Division 2, with the Hammers yet to lose a game in 13 matches so far this season in all competitions that have seen results against the likes of Valencia in the Premier League International Cup as well as a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Newport County in the EFL Trophy.

Indeed, the young Hammers have lofty goals for this season, with the objective seemingly being to return Division 1 of the Premier League 2 structure after being relegated last campaign, and so far, they are living up to this aim.

Players such as Nathan Holland, Dan Kemp and Alfie Lewis have been in exceptional form as their numbers from Transfermarkt show, and under Halajko, who was appointed as head coach of the U-23s this summer, plenty of youngsters are both prospering as well as getting the results that reflect their performances.

West Ham, along with Division 2 leaders Manchester United, are one of two teams in the 12-club league to not have lost a game yet this season as of writing this before their clash against West Brom on Monday night, and there is confidence to believe that the Hammers can continue this impressive streak.

Yet Halajko brings a calming sense of maturity to the squad best exhibited from his recent interview with West Ham’s official website, with the 39-year-old saying: “We can’t get carried away with ourselves. It is only mid-September and it’s a long, long league campaign. What we’ve done so far we’re pleased with, but we’re still a long way off achieving anything yet.”

Things seem to be clicking for West Ham this season for both the seniors and the U-23’s, and under Halajko, the young Hammers can seemingly have a season to remember if they keep their feet grounded and continue this impressive run of form stretching all the way back to July.
