The man who could solve West Ham’s striker issues this summer

|

West Ham could undergo an overhaul of strikers this summer in what Hammers fans will be hoping is a proactive transfer window for the club.

The club has already released Andy Carroll after his contract came to an end following the conclusion of the 2018/19 campaign.

Carroll played 142 times across seven years for West Ham and scored 34 goals in what was a move largely damaged severely by recurring injuries.

Another man who could leave this summer is Javier Hernandez, who is being linked with a move away from West Ham for around £8million.

Hernandez’s exit is one many Hammers fans would welcome given his £140,000 a week salary which he repaid with just 8 goals last season.

According to Football London, the replacement West Ham are looking to sign is Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez who was initially going to be part of a two-player deal with midfielder Stanislav Lobotka also rumoured to be making the move to the London Stadium, but that fell through a couple of days ago.

Gomez, 22, scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 35 appearances in La Liga last season, according to Who Scored.

He was the 13th highest goalscorer in the division despite his side finishing in 17th, just four points above the relegation zone.

A quality he showed last season that Manuel Pellegrini lacked from all of his strikers throughout the last campaign is he is consistent and always match fit.

He missed just three La Liga matches last season and scored in every month of the campaign except February.

A prolific striker is something West Ham really missed last season, with only Marko Arnautovic (11) and Felipe Anderson (10) making it into double figures.

In fact, quite remarkably, no West Ham player has scored more goals in a single top-flight campaign than Maxi Gomez’s 13 last season since Marlon Harewood scored 16 back in the 2005/06 season.

Gomez also has international pedigree, having played 12 times for Uruguay – two of which were at last summer’s World Cup.

The striker is valued at around £40million which would break the club’s previous transfer record which currently stands at £34.2million which they paid for Felipe Anderson.

Gomez could be the second international to join West Ham in a matter of days following the signing of Pablo Fornals from Villareal.

The Hammers have shown a real statement of intent so far in the transfer window, going after elite talent as they bid to push on from their 10th place finish in the Premier League last season.
