Charlton Athletic manager Alan Curbishley has revealed he was stuck with a choice between Teddy Sheringham or Paolo Di Canio.

Curbishley: ‘I was quite interested in Teddy before West Ham signed him in the summer of 2004. I also remember when he left Tottenham in the summer of 2003, because he was available and local.

‘But in the end, it looked certain that Teddy would sign for Portsmouth – so we went for Paolo Di Canio instead.

‘I had spoken to Teddy in the past about our situation. We were establishing ourselves in the Premiership, and he felt he could fit into our side – especially with the people we had at the time.

‘It never happened in the end.’
