Talk of top performer staying at West Ham is refreshing after years of mercenaries: Comment

|

As per West Ham source Claret and Hugh, there’s a good chance that defender Angelo Ogbonna could extend his stay at the club to the point where he ends his career with the Irons, and that might well be something that puts a smile on faces right now.

Not always a first-team guarantee in his time at the club, Ogbonna has arguably had his best season to date with the Irons this campaign, and is likely a contender for the Player of the Year award – whenever it actually takes place.

Would you like to see him stay?

Yes

No

Indeed, he’s shown real improvement this season and an extra level of consistency to the extent where, now, it seems fair to say that he is a first-choice centre-back alongside whoever David Moyes decides to pick with him.

He’s played 24 games this season for the Irons in the Premier League, and at the age of 31 is right at the peak of his defensive powers, clearly using the last few seasons of Premier League experience to his advantage.

Talk, then, of him potentially staying at the club until he retires should be celebrated.

Not only is it a sign that the Hammers are looking to keep their best players instead of just letting them go, but it’s also a clear sign that the club’s best players want to stay put and potentially never leave.

Ogbonna has become a fan favourite and seeing someone at their peak not suddenly wanting to jump ship at this club is refreshing – plenty others of more mercenary tendencies have done differently in the recent past.

Of course, there’s no point in counting chickens just yet, but it does seem as though the defender is happy and playing well, let’s hope it rubs off on others.
