After coming back from two goals down, to level the fixture, the Hammers were beaten by an injury time penalty at St Marys’ Stadium.

The result leaves the Hammers with no points from the first two games of the season and occupying the bottom position in the table.

Matters started to go wrong for West Ham in the warm up ahead of the game when Winston Reid was forced to pull out with a calf problem.

Things got worse for the Hammers when, in the tenth minute, Southampton took the lead, scoring their first goal in seven home games, when Manolo Gabbiadini was on hand to side-foot the ball past Joe Hart.

A goal behind, the Hammers cause wasn`t helped when Marko Arnautovic was shown a straight red card for the use of an elbow on Tadic. Earlier on Mark Noble had escaped a similar fate after a bad tackle on Lemina.

The Hammers were to go 2-0 down in the thirty-eighth minute when Jose Fonte, returning to his former stomping ground, brought down Davis. Tadic took responsibility for the spot-kick and beat Hart.

But, a goal from Javier Hernandez, right on the stroke of half-time, gave the Hammers support some hope that they could get back into the game.

That hope became a reality in the seventy-fourth minute when Hernandez was on hand to provide another clinical finish to level the game up at 2-2.

But, with it all to play for, West Ham were to be dealt a savage blow when deep into stoppage time Pablo Zabaleta was adjudged to have pushed Yoshida in the back and Austin strode up to put the resulting penalty into the back of the net.

Two games gone, two defeats, it can only get better!
