Robert Snodgrass says defeat to Manchester City is the early wake-up call club needed

West Ham winger Robert Snodgrass has claimed that the Hammers 5-0 defeat to Manchester City is what the club needed going forward in the new season.

Speaking to The Evening Standard, the Scottish international believes that the thrashing from City last weekend in the opening game of the new campaign is what West Ham needed and it could serve as a wake-up call heading deeper into the Premier League season.

Snodgrass said: “It is a disappointing start but that does not define our season. If anything, it is sometimes the best thing that can happen because you need to get back to the drawing board and realise what this Premier League is all about.

“We were conceding goals through the pre-season as well. The manager has touched on it, saying we cannot keep conceding goals. We never helped ourselves at stages (against Man City), gifting them a couple of goals, but it is the start of the season and we must get ourselves ready for the next game.”

West Ham were easily taken apart by the reigning Premier League champions, but Snodgrass remains confident that the Hammers can get back up on their feet if they can create a winning mentality within in the squad, starting against Brighton and Hove Albion next weekend.

Snodgrass said about the upcoming fixture against the Seagulls: “We need to breed a winning mentality and get points on the board. Brighton are always a hard team to play against. It is the same as any team in this league, you saw Norwich come up and had a go at Liverpool.”

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have a relatively easy run of fixtures coming up in the next few weeks, with West Ham facing off against two of the newly promoted teams in their next four games as well as Watford at Vicarage Road.
